Immigration to Australia as Skilled Worker
To get Citizenship of Australia, you first need to obtain the Permanent Residency (PR) in Australia. The Permanent Residency allows an applicant to live, study or work in any state of Australia. Now, once you have spent enough time in Australia as a Permanent Resident, you can apply for Australian Citizenship.
Difference between PR Status and citizenship in Australia
Although, PR status of an immigrant is more like a citizenship itself, however, the key difference between Australia permanent residency and citizenship provides you with some added privileges, i.e. voting and running election office. Moreover, unlike permanent residents, the citizens of Australia are not prohibited from applying in some defence associated jobs or moving outside Australia for countless periods, without any hassles of Resident Return Visa (RRV), etc.

Australia needs skilled workers from overseas to meet the skill shortage in the country. You need to nominate the relevant occupation matching your profile and accordingly apply for the most appropriate PR visa in Australia through the online or offline medium.
Point system to obtain Australia PR
The General Skilled Migration (GSM) program of Australia is largely popular among the immigrants. It follows the point system to assess the capability of the prospective immigrant to Australia. An applicant needs to submit online Expression of Interest (EOI) and score minimum 60 points (qualifying marks) based on age, education, work experience, etc. criteria to qualify as an applicant.
The higher the better!
It means, higher points than just the qualifying marks, and ensures the ITA (Invitation to apply) to apply for Australia PR Visa.
There are two key skilled PR visa categories under GSM, i.e.
- Subclass 189 Visa (Independent Skilled Permanent visa)
- Subclass 190 Visa (State nominated permanent visa)
If your profile is selected, you will receive ITA. On receipt of ITA, you need to apply for PR visa within 60 days.
Conditions for Citizenship
Once you have got PR visa approval, you can move to Australia. However, to become eligible to apply for Australian Citizenship, you need to show a minimum of four years permanent residence status in Australia immediately prior to your application for citizenship.
Recently, Australia has strengthened the Citizenship test requirements. As per the latest requirements, an applicant needs to go through the English proficiency test, along with the regular written test for citizenship with new questions added.
