The Digital immigration system at Australian International airports are providing all new experience to the staff as well as to people coming to Australia. At now, Australia is using the highly advanced technology for immigration process at its international airports, probably the most advanced in the world.
The immigration department and staff are still getting used to the new technology, as most of the immigration system at airports has become automated.
Immigration Department is going to be ‘Virtually Invisible’
With the latest automated system, the staff is gradually being moved significantly from the whole process; however, the travelers passing through the airports may observe small change in the proceedings says DIBP (Department of Immigration and Border Protection).
The CIO (Chief Information Officer) of the DIBP Randall Brugeaud stated in a business meeting at the capital city that with the implementation of advanced technology the department is likely to be ‘Virtually Invisible’.
Benefits and dealings with the new technology
As per Brugeaud, about eighty percent of the people at airports during Christmas period were processed using the automated system. He further added that there are obvious benefits of the new technology some measures are to be taken by the staff as they are still getting used to the new system. One of the key measures is to learn to be multi-skilled, as new technology will be brought more in future.
More technologies are being tested and may soon get implemented this year. The contactless technology is all set to be introduced at the SmartGates of the Australian international airports and by 2020, the government is expecting to process about 90 percent of the travellers electronically.
Paper documents to be replaced
The paper documents are expected to be replaced with the latest image-matching technology which is the part of government’s ‘no-touch’ policy. It means the travelers can pass through the whole immigration processing at airports without even interacting with a person.
The need of the physical documents, i.e. passport etc. won’t be required while passing through the SmartGates at the airports. The new system in place with scan the facial image against the passport information and data stored at the passport office of the Oz. Such data will be the one already verified in the past against the current passport of the traveler.
However, the travelers would still require carrying the physical passport as they might be marked for manual processing Moreover. the electronic processing will be optional and passengers can even ask for manual processing.
