Australian government immigration has been in news throughout the month of April in view of their unanticipated actions and announcements. One among such announcement was abolition of Subclass 457 visa program for temporary foreign professionals. The abolished 457 visa program has been replaced by two new temporary visa streams.
The other key decision that government took was removing over 200 occupations from its popular skilled occupation list. This list allows the overseas skilled professionals to nominate an occupation (as the occupations in the list are considered as high demand occupations in Australia) and apply for the visa in Australia.
Introduction of TSS and Removal of Occupations
The Australian government under the Prime Ministership of Malcolm Turnbull took two major steps together. Firstly, replacing the 457 visa, with new Temporary Skilled Visas (TSS) program and secondly, slashing down 2016 occupation from the occupation list containing a total of 651 occupations. Now the total occupations remaining the list are 435 only.
Under the new TSS program, two new temporary visa categories have been introduced for 2 years and 4 years. The new Temporary Skilled Visas (TSS) will take effect from March 2018. However, among all the buzz and chaos of key immigration changes, issues and concerns are being raised by several employers and intellectuals over the removal of hundreds of occupations from the popular occupations lists of Oz.
The process of replacing the existing 457 visa program is in process. Now with the cut down of 216 occupations from the skills list, about 167 occupations will be eligible for the 4-year temporary visa, whereas, 268 occupations will be there for the 2-year temporary visa of Australia. As per the government changes to the immigration and visa categories have been made in order to make opportunities available for Australian employees.
Concerns being raised over Removal of Several occupations
The concerns are being raised from several parts of the Australian corporate world and society with regards to the removal of bulk of occupations from the key occupation lists, as the occupations, i.e. historian, Engineering, Singer, IT, etc. are highly in demand and requisite supply of the highly skilled and talented people from Australia is in question.
The employers in Australia though welcomed the key visa and immigration associated changes; however, at the same time, most of them consider that the decision of 457 visa scrap is taken under political pressure and not based on the actual situation. As per few intellectuals and eminent personalities, the main issue with the 457 visa program was the perception of the general public about the same and not with its operation.
The 457 visa program was a greatly valued visa program, however, misconceptions about its use and exaggeration with regards to the same resulted in it becoming the target of the critics of migration said Innes Willox- the chief executive of Australian Industry Group.
As per the chief executive of Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Jenny Lambert, Skilled Migration enhances the economy and improve the opportunities for the people of Australia by the way of training the Australian workforce. Moreover, it provides business with short-term reach to the skills. Hence, any visa reform respecting the public opinion must be done keeping in mind the growth and productivity objectives of the different regions as well.
