IELTS Vs PTE Which is Easy for Immigration?

by By Rajneesh Kumar

Posted on November 24, 2021

IELTS and PTE: Which is Easy for Immigration?

The IELTS and PTE are the two widely popular and accepted language tests worldwide for immigration purposes. These tests are designed to help you prove your English language ability to work, study or immigrate to a nation whose native language is English.

While choosing a language test for immigration, people often compare the two, which leads to an IELTS vs PTE debate. As a prospective student or aspiring immigrant prepping up an immigration application, you must understand the difference between IELTS and PTE language testing systems.

Let’s read more about both testing options to help you make an informed choice.

IELTS- International English Language Testing System

IELTS is recognized by over 11,000 educational institutions and organizations worldwide. There are two categories of tests under IELTS, including General Training and Academic.

IDP Education manages IELTS Academic, Cambridge Assessment English and the British Council. Over 400 Canadian universities and colleges accept IELTS Academic tests and are generally administered in approximately 140 countries. While, IELTS General Training is required for immigration to Canada, Australia, the UK, and New Zealand.

IRCC accepts both paper-based and computer-delivered Academic and General Training tests. For paper-based tests, you generally get the results after 13 days, and for computer-based tests, the time is within 5-7 days. In this PTE vs IELTS debate, this is the main difference. IELTS offers you a choice between a computer-delivered or paper-based exam. At the same time, PTE is an entirely computer-based test. For instance, during the IELTS speaking section, you have a face to face interaction with the examiner, whereas for PTE speaking section, you talk to the system.

Moreover, in the testing time of the Pandemic, the partners have also introduced an IELTS Indicator. It was a temporary measure that helped international students to complete their tests online from their homes.

Both IELTS Academic and General Training can only be completed at an IELTS centre, i.e. in-person and the only English tests that IRCC approves for international students who wish to fast-track their student visa applications.

Under Student Direct Stream, residents of India, China, Vietnam, the Philippines, Morocco, Senegal and Pakistan may get their study permit application processed within 20 days if they obtain a minimum of 6.0 on each skill, i.e. reading, writing, listening, and speaking.

Pearson Test of English (PTE)

The Pearson Test of English is accepted by 90% of universities and colleges in countries like Canada and Australia and is generally available in more than 50 countries. Moreover, you can also get the results within two days.

Surprisingly, PTE also provides Versant test online during Pandemic to help international students get assessed at home. Surprisingly, you get the results immediately upon test completion.

Here is a IELTS and PTE score comparison:

PROFICIENCY LEVEL IELTS PTE
Expert 9 89-90
Very good 8.5 83-85
Very good 8 74-84
Good 7.5 73-77
Good 7 64-72
Competent 6.5 58-63
Competent 6 50-57
Modest 5.5 42-49
Modest 5 35-41
Limited 4.5 30-34
Extremely limited 0.4 0-30

Upon getting a Canadian PR, you get a right to live in any province or territory and work for any employer.
  2. Free Healthcare- Canada provides universal healthcare facilities for Canadian permanent residents and their family members. Medical care is offered free of cost and covers all the prescribed drugs.
  3. Free Education- The Canadian government provides free education for dependent children of permanent residents and citizens of Canada. Also, the tuition fees for Canada’s university education is dramatically reduced for PR visa holders.
  4. Settle with your Family- You can also bring along your family members or sponsor them later. They can live, study and work anywhere in Canada and become a permanent resident. However, you can sponsor your family members only if you are 18 years or above and have obtained a PR status in Canada.

There are three key federal economic immigration programs managed under Express Entry:

How to Improve Express Entry CRS Score?

by By Rajneesh Kumar

How to Improve Express Entry CRS Score

Are you willing to immigrate to Canada? But clueless about dealing with the complexities involved in the immigration process and still figuring out how to boost your chances by improving your CRS score?

This blog can give a better insight to prospective Canadian immigrants by discussing how an applicant can maximize their Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score and boost their ranking in the Express Entry pool.

Let’s start with talking about the Express Entry System, which was introduced in 2015 to electronically manage applications for three key economic immigration programs of Canada:

  • Federal Skilled Worker Class (FSWC)
  • Federal Skilled Trades Class (FSTC)
  • Canadian Experience Class (CEC)

Under Express Entry, the IRCC selects candidates from a pool based on their ranking score, using CRS, i.e. Comprehensive Ranking System. Under CRS, candidates get points based on their age, language ability in English and French, level of education, etc. Candidates also get additional points if they have a qualification certificate in trade, i.e. province-recognized.

There are 1,200 points available, out of which 600 can be awarded for a provincial nomination or job offer, etc. From the remaining 600, up to 500 points are available for core human capital factors, and 100 points are for skills transferability.

Improving CRS Score

There are different ways in which an applicant in the Canada Express Entry pool can improve their ranking. Even a slight change in a key factor like improving English or French language ability from intermediate to initial advanced level can make a huge difference.

An applicant can take many potential improvement steps:

Language

Language is a crucial factor. Therefore, fluent English or French speakers have better chances. At the same time, candidates who have a possibility for improvement can consider retaking a test.

Any improvement in all four abilities, i.e. speaking, writing, reading, and listening, can bring a vast improvement in the overall CRS ranking score. While for a candidate reaching to initial advanced level, Canadian Language Benchmark 9 can be a considerable achievement. With this, they may get the threshold in the combination factors and score 100 points, in addition to the language factor points received for their right.

If you are a bilingual candidate, you should take language tests for English and French. By doing this, you can claim up to 50 points on the table.

Provincial Nominee Program

Here, we’ll talk about additional 600 points, which a candidate can obtain with a provincial nomination that guarantees an ITA in an upcoming draw and open a straight path towards permanent residence.

To achieve this, it is imperative to display complete education and work records, stay up to date with the latest immigration news, and have all relevant documents ready and evaluated to apply promptly.

PNP categories generally open and close quickly, sometimes within days or even hours.

Education

Education is considered a highly valued factor under the Comprehensive Ranking System. If a candidate enters the pool without an ECA report, they have to wait for a long time. However, they can increase their score by getting their education level(s) evaluated. By doing this, they can score up to 200 points, i.e. 150 for core human capital and additional 50 points in combination with Canadian work experience or language ability.

With a bachelor’s degree getting assessed, they can score up to 170 points. So, an educated CEC candidate with no ECA in the pool should get an ECA as soon as possible.

Furthermore, suppose a candidate completes an additional level of education in terms of a degree, diploma or certificate that is assessed. In that case, that can also prove to be beneficial in improving their ranking under the CRS.

A Final Note for all

If I were to offer a one piece of advice to all the candidates under Express Entry program, it would be to stay aware, informed, and guided by a team of experts in Canadian immigration. With a team of advisors at Visas Avenue, you can explore all the options. You can work in detail on improving your CRS score by taking calculated steps using our Canada CRS score calculator. Which is the simplest way to move to Canada in 2021

Moving to Canada with your loved ones is an easy affair when you choose the Express Entry Pathway. Also, if you are not invited, your profile will remain valid for the next year, and meanwhile, you can work towards creating a more robust profile by boosting your overall CRS scores.

Are you planning to migrate to Canada Here are a few things you must know!

If you desire to start a new life in Canada, you must have explored the best visa programs via which you can apply for Canadian permanent residency. Well, the most popular pathway to Canada PR is the Federal Express Entry System. Its application management was designed by the Immigration, Refugee, Citizenship Canada (IRCC). Under Express Entry, there are three key economic immigration programs through which the IRCC accepts eligible foreign nationals and invites them to apply for a Canadian PR visa.

But before all this, there are a few things about Canada that you should know as an aspiring immigrant. So, let’s just quickly have a look at the points mentioned below.

Official languages of Canada

There are two official languages of Canada, i.e., English and French. As an interested PR applicant, you must be capable enough to communicate in any two languages. Therefore, if you are applying for Canada PR, you must prove your proficiency in English or French. If you are highly proficient in English and French, you can integrate well into the Canadian labour force and society.

Best Places in Canadian

It would help if you decided where you wish to live once you move to Canada. Many immigrants choose big cities like Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal. However, these cities have a higher cost of living. If you are willing to live an affordable life, you may choose to move to cities like Calgary, Kingston, Regina, Halifax, etc.

Moving without a job offer is easy

Yes, you read it right! You can quickly move to Canada on a permanent resident visa without a job offer in hand. You can apply via Federal Skilled Worker Program, which is managed under Express Entry as it allows you to apply for Canada PR even if you don’t have an arranged employment. To qualify for this program, you need a minimum of 1 year of professional work experience gained in the past ten years in a steady, paid job.

Moving as a Provincial Nominee- Your go-to option

If you find your application stuck due to low CRS scores, then a provincial nominee program is there to rescue you. You can apply for a provincial nomination via Express Entry aligned PNP stream and get yourself awarded with additional 600 points towards overall CRS scores. Such a boost in your score will eventually guarantee you an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for Canada PR in the upcoming Express Entry draw.

Family Sponsorship

If any of your family members is already residing in Canada as PR holders or citizens, you can get sponsorship for Canada PR. Under the family sponsorship program, a Canadian citizen or permanent resident can sponsor their spouse, dependent children, parents and grandparents, and particular relatives for a Canadian permanent resident visa.

How to boost Express Entry Score instantly

Express Entry is one of the most popular Canadian immigration pathways for foreign nationals with skilled work experience. It’s an application management system, which is designed to accept and process PR applications under the following economic immigration programs:

  • Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP)
  • Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP)
  • Canadian Experience Class (CEC)

Candidates who enter the Express Entry pool are awarded a score and a rank using the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS). The scores are given out of 1200 based, and those who are among highest ranking candidates get an invitation to apply for Canada PR in an upcoming Express Entry draw.

As mentioned, to get an ITA, you must be among the highest-ranking candidates. Therefore, you must aim to grab maximum points under CRS.

To help you with this, we have come up with top-six options that’ll help you boost your overall CRS scores.

Let’s have a look at those top six ways.

Apply for provincial nomination

With a provincial nomination in your account, you get 600 additional points towards your overall CRS scores. There are a lot of Canadian provinces that run Express Entry aligned PNP streams. You must show that you are interested in moving to a province or territory. If any province finds you eligible, you’ll get a notification of interest in your Express Entry account.

Re-take language test

Another way to instantly increase your CRS score is to aim for a better IELTS score, i.e., up to CLB 9 or above. It’ll help you get up to 260 points under language ability. You can also claim additional points for French language ability.

Gain more work experience

While applying via Express Entry, your skilled work experience plays a crucial role in the selection process. If you gain more than 8 years of skilled work experience in an occupation listed under National Occupational Classification (NOC) skill level O, A or B, you can claim more points.

Claim spousal points

If you have a spouse, you may claim more points, if:

  • Your spouse retakes a language test or submits an ECA report (educational credential assessment) for any post-secondary education.
  • Your spouse is a stronger applicant than you. Therefore, you can make him/her a principal applicant.
  • Both of you are strong applicants. You both can submit Express Entry profiles and list each other as accompanying members. This will double your chances of getting an ITA for a Canada PR visa.
