Presently, both countries are known for abundant employment opportunities, better Permanent residency options, an immigrant-friendly society and a better living standard.
Globally, only countries naming Canada and Australia offer a direct PR visa pathway, i.e. without a prior job offer. However, the essential eligibility requirements and application process differ from one another.

An overview of Skilled Worker Programs: Canada’s Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP) and Australia’s Skilled Independent Visa Subclass 189
Both the programs target newcomers who possess the required skills and work experience. In addition, both the programs don’t need an applicant to demonstrate any connection to the nation regarding work experience, job offer or educational experience. This means that these immigration programs make an excellent choice for highly skilled and qualified individuals from any part of the world, regardless of whether they have any relation to Canada or Australia or not.

If you are familiar with the Federal Skilled Worker Program of Canada, you will know that you must have a minimum of 1 year of full-time work experience in a skilled occupation and score at least 67 points on the FSW grid. Canada defines skilled work experience as a job at NOC (National Occupational Classification) Skill Level 0, A, or B.
Similarly, Australia’s Subclass 189 Skilled Independent Visa program also requires you to prove your qualification to work in any eligible program occupation. Like Canada’s skilled occupation list, Australia also has a Skilled Independent Occupations List which indicates all the eligible occupations.
Both the immigration programs follow a points-assessment grid to determine candidates’ eligibility. The grids allot points for core human factors, like age, work experience, education, language proficiency, and other vital factors. For example, in Canada, you are required to obtain a minimum of 67 points out of 100; in Australia, you must get a minimum of 65 points.
If you meet the minimum points requirement, then you become eligible to submit your expression of interest in any of the two programs. However, always keep a fact in your mind that for both countries, simply meeting the points criteria does not guarantee you a PR visa. It is like the first step toward the application procedure.
Canada’s Federal Skilled Worker program is a part of the Express Entry System, which electronically manages all immigration applications. Through Express Entry, candidates who obtain 67 points or above must create an Express Entry profile online. The EE profile acts as their Expression of Interest.
Once a candidate creates an EE profile, they are awarded a Comprehensive Ranking System score (CRS) score.
Please note that the CRS score is a scoring system in which candidates receive points out of 1200 points. Therefore, it is different from the eligibility points grid.
An Express Entry, once created, remains valid for the next 12 months; if your profile doesn’t get selected in 12 months, then you can resubmit the same.
The IRCC conducts Express Entry draws every two weeks and invites the highest scoring candidates from the EE pool to submit their official Canadian PR visa applications. If your application is processed successfully, then you will receive permanent resident status for yourself and your accompanying family members who have been included in your application.
The application procedure for Australia’s Skilled Independent Visa Subclass 189 is similar to the Express Entry system of Canada. Firstly, you must meet the minimum score requirement of 65 points and submit an Expression of Interest through Australia’s SkillSelect system online. However, unlike in Canada, there is no secondary points system; the authority uses an eligibility grid for ranking the candidates.
Australia issues invitations twice a month and invites candidates with the highest ranking to apply for an Australian PR Visa. If multiple candidates have a similar ranking score, then the application of those candidates whose profiles were submitted earlier will be processed on a priority basis.
SkillSelect EOIs remain valid for a maximum of 2 years, and if you are not invited within those two years, they will expire.
Please note that the Australian Independent Skills Visa program determines occupation ceilings every year, and each eligible occupation gets a maximum application quota. Once the given quota is met, no other candidates in that particular occupation will get an invitation until the following year.
Canada excels in terms of processing time and cost. Canada’s Express Entry system processes 80% of complete applications within 4-6 months of receiving.
While in the case of Australia, around 75% of applications are processed within eight months of receiving.
Both the countries specialize in different sectors; Canada has a more excellent assembling base, while Australia is known for its strong IT base. You also get paid more if you are working in any clerical job in Australia, and when it comes to Canada, you get more hands-on wages. Also, minimum wages differ in the Canadian provinces, while the minimum wage is standard nationwide in Australia.
