Canada Immigration- Work on your English or French Language Proficiency

English or French Language are the two official languages of Canada. Therefore, a highly proficient person in the English and/or French language undeniably has better chances of integrating well into the Canadian labour force and communities. The Canadian government gives due importance to an immigrant's language skills so that the selected newcomer can easily integrate into the country's economy and workforce. The reason is that a newcomer with higher language fluency is more likely to get high-paying jobs in their early days in Canada than those with weaker language fluency. The Canadian immigration system reflects the importance of language proficiency in either of the two official languages for obtaining permanent residence and citizenship in Canada. Talking about the Federal Express Entry system, which was launched in 2015 to manage the pool of candidates under three key economic immigration programs, the system had raised the standards for determining which PR candidates are more likely to benefit and prosper in Canada. Following are the three programs managed under the Express Entry System:

  • Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP)
  • Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP)
  • Canadian Experience Class (CEC)

All the Express Entry candidates in the pool are assigned a Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score. The score is awarded to them based on human capital factors like education, age, language skills, work experience, etc. Under CRS, a primary applicant applying as single, i.e., without a spouse or common-law partner, can earn up to 290 points for high language proficiency in English and French in all four, including reading, writing, speaking, & listening. Keeping this in mind, we can't refrain from stating that in addition to getting a job offer or obtaining a provincial nomination, an act of improving your overall language scores can act as fuel for your Canada PR application under the Express Entry system.

English or French Language skills for international students

With more than 600,000 overseas students studying in Canada, almost half of them apply for Canada PR Visa. The successful ones obtain a legal status to work and live anywhere in Canada permanently. With a high CLB level, you can improve your chances of obtaining an ITA(Invitation to Apply). For instance, if you have a master's degree gained in Canada with CLB 8 and a year of Canadian skilled work experience, your CRS score would be 457. While, in case you improve your language skills by retaking the English test and score a CLB 9, then your CRS score would be 489. This is evident that by just improving English language skills, you can improve your score as well as Canada immigration chances drastically.

Additional Points for Francophone and French Speaking Applicants

Since October 20, 2020, both French-speaking and bilingual candidates in Express Entry pool also get additional points towards their Canadian immigrationapplication. Express Entry candidates now earn up to 50 additional points for their French language skills, no matter whether French is their second language. Suppose an applicant scores NCLC 7 or above on all four French language abilities (reading, writing, speaking and listening), then they can get:

  • 25 additional points- For CLB 4 or lower in English or didn't take an English test
  • 50 extra points- For CLB 5 or higher on all four English skills

As per the Canadian government, the key idea behind awarding additional points is to admit 4.4% of French-speaking immigrants by 2023 outside of Quebec, which was only 2.82% earlier. To conclude, we would like to say that as an aspiring immigrant dreaming of moving to Canada, you have to improve your language skills. If you emphasize English or French skills today, you can move towards meeting your Canada immigration objectives tomorrow. If you target earning higher language proficiency points by scoring CLB 9 or 10, you must focus on clearing IELTS with a higher band score.
