Is Low CRS Score Blocking your Canadian Immigration Path? Here is all you need to know!

by By Rajneesh Kumar

Posted on March 1, 2021

Immigrant Policy of Canada

Presently, Canada is indeed the most chosen destination by skilled foreign workers around the globe, owing to its friendly immigration policies and swift immigration pathway like Express Entry and PNP. There has been a steady growth in the overall number of skilled immigrants in Canada, who majorly hail from countries like India, China, Vietnam, etc.

As mentioned, the most popular and fastest pathway to permanent residency in Canada is through Express Entry system that follow a transparent point-based selection criteria. However, obtaining a low CRS score under Express Entry sometimes lead to unwanted delays and even rejection for applicants. At this point, it is imperative for you to choose alternative options to boost your overall CRS score or to choose another eligible program.

Provincial Nomination

Canada’s immigration system is unique with more than 80 immigration programs shared between Federal and provincial governments. As an Express Entry applicant, you have to qualify under any one of the three economic immigration programs, including:

  • Federal Skilled Worker
  • Federal Skilled Trades
  • Canadian Experience Class

Also, Canadian provinces too have a permission to setup their ‘Express Entry’ aligned PNP streams, which allows them to select and nominate eligible applicants from the EE pool who are suitable as per specific provincial requirements.

You may apply under those PNP streams and if you successfully get a provincial nomination, you’ll be awarded with additional 600 points towards your overall CRS score, which virtually guarantees you an ITA for Canada PR in the upcoming EE draw.

All three economic immigration programs mentioned above are managed by Express Entry and select those applicants who have proficiency in English or French language, relevant skilled work experience and educational qualification equal to Canadian standards. With a higher proficiency in both or any one of the two official languages of Canada, like CLB 9 or CLB 10, you will get higher points for language skills.

Immigration Pilots

There are other immigration programs offered in Canada like Atlantic Immigration Pilot program (AIPP) and Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot. All these are designed to meet the economy needs of specific regions or sectors in Canada. An a recent graduate from a public institution in any one of the four Atlantic provinces in Canada and a prior job offer in hand from an employer, you may qualify for Canadian permanent residence even without any work experience.

Many reasons will never make you regret moving to Canada, for instance, a stable economy and job market to multicultural communities and immigrants’ friendly policies.

Moreover, between 2021 and 2023, Canada will welcome approximately 1.2 million newcomers as permanent residents under various categories. There are many pathways by which an individual or family can easily immigrate to Canada and obtain Canada’s permanent resident status.

With more than 100 Canadian immigration pathways, it could be difficult for you to make the right choice.

Therefore, to keep things as simple as possible, we came up with the top two easiest and most popular permanent residency pathways in Canada.

Federal Express Entry System

Canada’s Express Entry system process PR applications from skilled foreign workers under the following economic immigration programs:

  • Foreign Skilled Worker Program (FSWP)
  • Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP)
  • Canadian Experience Class (CEC)

It follows a points-based selection system that select and invite eligible candidates from the pool who wish to settle in Canada permanently. All the applicants get points based on their age, work experience, education level, language proficiency, and other additional factors like provincial/territorial nomination.

The higher the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) points, the better are the chances of obtaining an invitation to apply (ITA) from the IRCC for permanent residency in Canada. As each Express Entry draw has a minimum CRS score and those candidates who meet the cut-off requirement of individual draw receive their ITAs from the IRCC (Immigration, Refugee, Citizenship Canada).

So far, in 2021, the IRCC has already issued 37,986 ITAs, which means that IRCC is readily working to achieve its Express Entry target of inviting 108,500newcomers by the end of 2021.

Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs)

Canada’s provincial nominee programs (PNPs) make an ideal option for those aspirants who wish to move to any specific Canadian province or territory or those whose points score is not high enough to qualify for Express Entry.

Each Canadian province and territory operate unique PNP streams which are designed to meet specific immigration needs. Therefore, the eligibility requirements and application process also vary.

For Provincial Nominee Program, the IRCC has an annual target of 80,800 for the year 2021. Popular Canadian PNPs like Alberta PNP, Saskatchewan PNP, British Columbia PNP, etc., are regularly opening draws with comparatively low score requirements to meet the numbers. More and more candidates from the pool get a chance to apply for a provincial nomination for Canadian PR.
