Perplexed to see so many visa changes and immigration process updates in Australia in last one week? Well, you have every reason to be confused like thousand others. Australia has announced several changes to its immigration program in last one week. It includes changes to 457 visa program, updating of occupation lists, and reform in the citizenship test process. Australia announced key changes to its immigration SystemIn view of internal politics, pressure from opposition and need for streamlining the visa process, the changes in the immigration process was on the cards from the Aussie government. And it finally came last week, when Australian Prime Minister, Malcolm Turnbull announced the news of scrapping the famous 457 visa program that allows the skilled workers from overseas to come to Australia and work for up to four years. The 457 visa is the employer sponsored visa mostly applied by immigrant workers from India, UK, and China.

The other major change announced by the government was updating of the high demand occupation lists, i.e. Skilled Occupation List (SOL) and Consolidated Sponsored Occupation List (CSOL). Both SOL and CSOL of Australia got replaced by two new occupation lists, i.e. Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL) and Combined List of Eligible Skilled Occupations. The crucial announcement the government couple of days back is making citizenship test requirement stricter. Though 457 Visa program was a crucial immigration program of Australia, through which thousands of immigrant workers used to work in Australia, however, its not that all doors for working or living in Australia have been closed. There are other pathways also through which you can live and work in Australia temporary or permanent basis. Lets take a look. (Note: With effect from April 19, 2017, Australian Government has replaced the old Occupation lists, i.e. SOL & CSOL with new Skilled Occupation lists, i.e. Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL) & Short-term Skilled Occupation List (STSOL). The visa applicants, eligible to nominate an occupation from STSOL, also have access to some occupations in MLTSSL. Hence, both the lists (STSOL & MLTSSL) have been combined to form a new Combined List of Eligible Skilled Occupations and hence, there is no separate STSOL list.)   What are the Alternate pathways for Immigration to Australia under present Circumstances?There are several other visa categories immigrant workers from India and other countries opt for moving to Australia as a skilled worker or permanent resident.   • Skilled Independent Subclass 189 Visa

Its a permanent visa that doesnt require any sponsorship from employer or state in Australia. Its a largely applied visa from skilled workers from overseas.

  • Skilled Nominated Subclass 190 Visa

Its state nominated visa permanent visa. To apply for this visa, you first need the nomination from a state or territory government agency in Australia.

  • Skilled Regional Subclass 489 Visa

Its a temporary visa for 4 years. However, to apply for this visa you need to have a nomination form a state or territory or a family member from Regional Australia.
