And it finally came last week, when Australian Prime Minister, Malcolm Turnbull announced the news of scrapping the famous 457 visa program that allows the skilled workers from overseas to come to Australia and work for up to four years. The 457 visa is the employer sponsored visa mostly applied by immigrant workers from India, UK, and China.
The other major change announced by the government was updating of the high demand occupation lists, i.e. Skilled Occupation List (SOL) and Consolidated Sponsored Occupation List (CSOL). Both SOL and CSOL of Australia got replaced by two new occupation lists, i.e. Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL) and Combined List of Eligible Skilled Occupations. The crucial announcement the government couple of days back is making citizenship test requirement stricter.
Though 457 Visa program was a crucial immigration program of Australia, through which thousands of immigrant workers used to work in Australia, however, it’s not that all doors for working or living in Australia have been closed. - Skilled Regional Subclass 489 Visa
It’s a temporary visa for 4 years. However, to apply for this visa you need to have a nomination form a state or territory or a family member from Regional Australia.
